Day One

Join as volunteer, leave as impact entrepreneur
  • Experience, contribute, grow

A one-of-a-kind training program for Impact Entrepreneurs
  • Welcome to Day One

    A program by Incitement

One day you might receive powerful entrepreneurship training and hang out with speakers from Google, TED, iTunes, and UNESCO – just to name a few. Another day you’re out on a 4WD, heading deep into the Malaysian jungle to help underprivileged live better lives. Or you could be visiting a refugee school teaching refugee kids. The day after, you and your team could be deeply focused behind your laptops, working on one of many game changing social projects.

  • Questions & answers
The schedule looks quite packed. Will I have enough free time?

This training schedule is an example to give you an idea of what the program will look like. Don’t worry, it will most certainly not be this busy every week. You will have plenty of free time and free weekends to travel and see Malaysia.

Do I have to attend both modules?

No, but it is recommended to attend both. You can attend only Module A, or you can attend only Module B. But you and the people you’ll be working with will certainly reap the best results when you attend the High Impact Module (a combination of Module A & B). Plus, if you do, there’s a sweet discount.

What if I go on a weekend trip and miss a training?

The training schedule is for you to follow at your own discretion. All we ask of you is to ensure you don’t let your team down. Should you want to travel on a weekday, talk to your team to see if this will conflict with your schedule. We understand that you want to experience Asia to the fullest 😉

    Is this the final schedule?

This is a tentative schedule with sample trainings. The content of the trainings and workshops and their times might vary depending on the availability of the trainers. Depending on the type of social projects which are started by participants you will receive customized trainings.

    Can I request specific trainings?

Yes! Should you want to receive a specific training topic, you can let us know during your application. We will try to attend to your request best we can.

What kind of NGOs will I be working with?

Some of the best in Malaysia and South East Asia. Incitement has a wide network of NGO partners, some of which you’ll be working with directly. The impact areas we generally work on are poverty, education, climate change, energy poverty, homeless, youth, health, community development, and refugee issues. All our projects are aligned with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Can I download the full schedule?

Yes. You can find the full schedule in the brochure. Remember: the schedule is tentative, changes might happen. If you have any questions about the schedule, feel free to ask us!

  • FAQs

You ask. We answer. Anything at all.
Why should I pay to volunteer?

Good question! A lot of people are surprised when they realize they have to pay to volunteer. However, the cost of volunteering includes accommodation, training costs, and in-country support staff. When you consider the costs you might incur at a hotel or eat at restaurants, the costs are minimal.
Plus, as Day One offer non-profit program fees you know that every penny of your program fee is going to the local organisations and the people you have chosen to support. Our local partners are grassroot organizations who, in many cases, are solely funded by volunteer fees, and for the concept to work fees are essential. Ultimately, it is a decision of where your money goes… to a hotel, or to a local family. We know which one we’d choose.

    Where will I be staying?

All our volunteers are hosted in villas located in Bangsar, one of the most popular neighbourhoods in Kuala Lumpur. You will share your villa together with a group of other Day One participants.

Are there more expenses once I arrive?

Although the program fee includes your accommodation, trainings and some social activities and trips you will need additional money for buying snacks and souvenirs, eating at cafes or restaurants, socializing with other volunteers and locals, transport and weekend travel.
Other costs include your flights, travel insurance, visa and vaccinations, departure tax and buying a local sim card.
Once you’ve arrived you may need to pay for local buses to and from your project, which can cost around USD 1-2 per day depending on your destination and program type. You may also need to pay for bottled water and wifi but this is usually very cheap.

Why would I pick Day One over another volunteering abroad program?

Day One is a program created by Incitement. We are known for our high-quality programs and impact through volunteering; it’s the very reason we’ve grown to every continent on the planet within just a few years. Day One not just about volunteering, it is about creating a holistic approach to business by incorporating social impact creation.

In 12 weeks we will provide all the information needed to start your own social project or even your own social company, give you the chance to implement it in one of our partner projects and then take the project template home and implement it in your own country. We strongly believe that social entrepreneurship is the future, and we’re committed to sharing as much information and support as one is willing to take.

Where does the money I pay go?

We are an independent organization that does not rely on fundraising or government funding to achieve social goals. We get all our funding from the fees paid by our volunteers and participating brands. These fees are not a one-off donation to your chosen project. These fees go towards the costs of your trip, long-term support for the project you work on, and the international organization and infrastructure needed to make sure our projects and social goals around the world are sustainable and successful.

And, of course, we don’t request money from our partner organizations in the developing world. All our work is 100% funded through your contributions as a volunteer.

It is this financial independence that gives us the freedom to set up projects wherever we consider these will have the most impact and where we believe that our volunteers can make a valuable contribution.

Your project price, therefore, not only covers the costs that are directly linked to your presence on the ground, but also a share of all the other costs needed to run our high quality volunteering projects.

    Which module should I choose?

It depends on you. We recommend you do both modules A and B, which is the High Impact Program, because based on our experience, participants and beneficiaries reap the most benefits from undergoing the entire program. You’ll learn Impact Entrepreneurship from A-Z, not only how to build a social project, but also how to effectively run a team to implement your project to create positive social impact & churn a profit.

However, it is also possible to choose individual modules. Both are excellent training programs. It’s really up to you.
